Reimagining Travel: A Community-Driven Network for Britain and Ireland

A transformative new project is aiming to reshape how people journey through Britain and Ireland using the power of community and active travel.

Slow Ways, a Community Interest Company driven by volunteers, has already linked every town and city in Great Britain through a detailed web of walking routes covering more than 140,000 kilometres.

With the next phase now underway, Slow Ways is launching a major crowdfunding initiative to build a digital platform designed for everyone – whether travelling on foot, bike, wheelchair, horseback or with a pushchair.

Founded by explorer and former teacher Daniel Raven-Ellison, Slow Ways champions the benefits of outdoor activity and inclusivity.

He remarked: “Slow Ways is a movement built by thousands of people who’ve contributed their time and local knowledge. We’ve connected Britain’s towns and cities with walking routes. Now we want to take that further, to make it easier for everyone to find and follow routes that match their interests and needs.”

The planned platform will feature a mobile app, comprehensive mapping capabilities, and a fully interactive website, allowing users to discover a range of routes from urban strolls to countryside expeditions.

In its upcoming expansion, Slow Ways will extend its reach into the Channel Islands and Ireland, introducing themed routes designed to appeal to different interests – from accessible loops and scenic walks to heritage-based trails and family outings.

A standout feature will be the ability for community groups, schools, and local organisations to build and publish their own bespoke routes. Whether highlighting a nature spot or showcasing local history, these curated journeys will be made visible to all.

“Too many people miss out on active travel because they don’t know where to go or how to start,” said Raven-Ellison. “This new platform will change that, offering inclusive, reliable and inspiring options for anyone looking to explore and get about under their own steam. I love lots of the existing route navigation and wellbeing apps, they’re great – but they often leave out people with special-interests or important needs. We’ll do better than them on that, by enabling groups and organisations to share routes that they know their communities will enjoy and be able to trust.”

When completed, the upgraded system will support walking, cycling, running, wheeling, and equestrian travel, reflecting the full range of human-powered mobility.

With nearly 1,000 supporters already backing the cause and a quarter of the initial £250,000 target pledged, the campaign is off to a promising start. The ultimate fundraising goal of £500,000 will enable the full-scale development and expansion of this inclusive travel tool.

“This is about making it easier for everyone to enjoy being outdoors and connect with the places around them,” said Raven-Ellison. “We’re building something big together, and we’d love your support to make it happen. Small and large donations will help. Just showing your support will make a genuine difference.”

The campaign will run until 31st July. To learn more and donate, visit Slow Ways on Crowdfunder.
