On Thursday, June 19, 2025, the Can Ruti Campus will host the Drones in Health Conference, an event where the results of the latest proof of concept for transporting biological samples using drones in the Northern Metropolitan Region will be presented. The conference is organized by the TIC Salut Social Foundation, with the collaboration of key project partners: the Center for Telecommunications and Information Technologies, T-Systems, the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital, the Northern Metropolitan Primary Care of the Catalan Institute of Health, the Emergency Medical System, and the BCN Drone Center.
The pilot project, carried out between the Sant Fost – Martorelles Primary Care Center and the Clinical Laboratory of the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, is the first of its kind in a suburban environment in Catalonia. This initiative is part of the work started in 2023 with previous tests in the Garrotxa region, which have already shown very positive results.
The results of the report presented are remarkable:
• 72.3% reduction in transportation time
• 99.2% decrease in CO₂ emissions
• Maintenance of pre-analytical sample quality within clinically acceptable parameters
• Particularly positive results in serum glucose levels
Although there are still regulatory, logistical, and infrastructure barriers, the results reaffirm the potential of drone transportation as an efficient, safe, and sustainable option within the Catalan public health system.
The June 19 conference will include technical presentations, roundtable discussions with all involved parties, and a space for debate on the future of healthcare transportation with emerging technologies.
