Andrea Luigi Campomilla of Green has developed a new pump drive that promises to increase efficiency in data center cooling, representing an exciting innovation from Switzerland.

Green, the leading Swiss data center provider, has announced a major technological breakthrough in energy-efficient data center cooling. Andrea Luigi Campomilla, the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Engineer for Green, has successfully commissioned a newly developed pump drive that shows promising results.

The pump drive, designed by Campomilla, offers 15 percent more efficiency compared to current air-cooled systems. This innovative design is the latest addition to Green’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency in their data center operations.

Efficient cooling is a crucial element for data center operators to achieve energy savings. Green’s data center design is focused on achieving energy efficiency and sustainability, with all elements optimized for thermal and energy efficiency during the planning phase. The cooling infrastructure is also designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for efficient use of different cooling technologies for different power densities. This overall system results in a sustainable and effective balance between performance and energy efficiency.

Campomilla’s in-house development of a central infrastructure element for energy-efficient cooling is a significant milestone for Green. It further drives the optimization of the overall system, making it more efficient and sustainable.

The newly developed pump drive combines motor, frequency converter, and pump in a compact design. The motor features direct water cooling through a specially designed cooling pipe system, while the frequency converter is mounted on a heat-dissipating carrier plate. This system is low-maintenance, produces less noise, and has a higher return temperature, allowing for increased heat dissipation into the heating network. Most importantly, it offers 15 percent energy savings, making it a highly efficient option for data center cooling.

The new pump drives have already been installed in Data Center M on the Metro-Campus Zurich in June 2025, with the presence of project partners Dietz-motoren and smcooling. The plan going forward is to use this new pump as the standard in all other Green data centers. “Energy efficiency is paramount for us, which is why we are always investing in further development,” explains Andrea Luigi Campomilla.

Green is the leading data center provider in Switzerland, with six data centers located at four locations in the greater Zurich area. They are currently constructing three more data centers in Dielsdorf and Lupfig. Green enables high-performance computing for cloud providers and large companies while also offering comprehensive networking solutions across all locations.

Their range of services has gained global recognition, and they are the only Swiss data center provider to receive an M&O Stamp of Approval from the renowned Uptime Institute. Green has also been named the Swiss market leader for data centers and colocation for the fifth consecutive time by international consulting firm ISG. Additionally, they have won the ‘Decarbonisation of Data Centre Heat Innovation Award 2024’ at the Data Cloud Global Awards in Cannes and the award for the best new data center project in London.
