Groundbreaking Perinatal Mental Health Study Underway at Siriraj Hospital, with Support from Pranaiya & Arthur Magoffin Foundation
Bangkok, Thailand – A groundbreaking study on perinatal mental health is currently being conducted at Siriraj Hospital, Thailand’s oldest and largest public hospital. Titled “Prevalence and Factors Associated with Depression in Pregnant and Postpartum Women: A Prospective Cohort Study of Siriraj Hospital,” the research aims to understand the prevalence and causes of depression among women during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
The study, led by Assistant Professor Dr. Keerati Pattanaseri, brings together a team of experts from different disciplines including psychiatrists, obstetrician-gynaecologists, and paediatricians. Spanning over two years, this study is one of the most extensive efforts ever undertaken in Thailand to address the issue of perinatal depression.
Funding and support for the research are being provided by the Pranaiya & Arthur Magoffin Foundation (“PAM Foundation”), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving awareness, care, and research around maternal mental health.
“We would like to express our gratitude to the researchers involved in this study for their interest in this often-overlooked topic. We would also like to thank the participants who have bravely shared their experiences as part of this research. We wish them all the best,” said Hamish Magoffin, founder of PAM Foundation.
Despite affecting up to one in six mothers around the world, postpartum depression remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Stigma, lack of funding, and limited access to mental health services are some of the barriers that prevent proper identification and treatment of this condition. This study aims to generate important local data that can inform policies, training, and early intervention practices in Thailand.
Siriraj Hospital, founded in 1888, is the oldest and largest public hospital in Thailand. It is the primary teaching hospital of Mahidol University and is widely recognized as the country’s leading academic and medical research institution, known for its excellence in patient care, education, and innovation.
The Pranaiya & Arthur Magoffin Foundation (PAM Foundation) is a non-profit organization with a presence in Thailand, the UK, and the US. It was established in memory of Pranaiya and Arthur and continues their legacy by addressing perinatal mental health conditions through three pillars: awareness and education, care, and research.
