The cancer charity urges individuals to become its Friend on International Friendship Day.

From Me to You, a national charity dedicated to inspiring people to write letters to those living with cancer, is calling for more support to help end the isolation often experienced by cancer patients. As International Friendship Day approaches on July 30th, the charity is urging people to become a Friend of the charity and make regular donations to assist in its mission of providing friendship and connection to those in need.

According to the charity, 1 in 3 people living with cancer will face loneliness, highlighting the importance of spreading love and compassion to those who are fighting the disease. From Me to You is encouraging individuals to participate in its Donate A Letter program, which has seen a significant increase in demand for its services. The charity is asking for financial support through their Friends of From Me scheme to help fund the program.

The power of letters in creating connections and bringing comfort to friends, family, and even strangers going through cancer is a core value of From Me to You. Last year, the charity sent out 13,500 letters to cancer patients across the UK, providing a welcomed distraction from treatment for some and a lifeline for others.

Alison Hitchcock, Co-Founder of From Me to You, emphasizes the importance of friendship during difficult times, stating, “Everyone needs friends to help them through difficult times in life, but all too often we hear that people living with cancer feel so alone.” She adds, “Sometimes even the closest friends don’t know what to say when someone they love has been diagnosed with cancer. This is why receiving a letter, even from a total stranger, can be more powerful than anyone can imagine.”

To continue providing this valuable service, the charity requires resources and funding. As a small charity with low overheads, donations go towards purchasing necessary items such as stamps and envelopes. For example, a donation of £6 a month could cover the cost of eight stamps, allowing eight people to receive letters every month. By the end of the year, 96 individuals will have experienced the joy of receiving a letter.

Individuals interested in becoming a Friend of From Me to You can sign up on the charity’s website. For those looking to donate or receive a letter, they can also sign up on the website.
