The annual event “National Allotments Week 2025” commences to promote growth and wellbeing within the community.

The National Allotment Society is excited to announce the launch of National Allotments Week 2025, which will take place from August 11th to 17th. This annual event celebrates the important role that allotments play in promoting physical, mental, and nutritional wellbeing for individuals across the UK.

With this year’s theme being “Allotments and Wellbeing,” the Society has released new findings from a national survey that shed light on the numerous benefits of allotment gardening. The survey, which was conducted among plot holders, shows that allotments are not just places to grow food, but also serve as vital lifelines for community connection, exercise, and mental health support.

One of the key findings from the survey is that 88.1% of plot holders believe that allotments have a positive impact on their physical health, giving a score of 8 or above on a scale of 1 to 10. Additionally, 62.9% gave a perfect score of 10/10 for the mental health benefits of allotment gardening. This highlights the significant role that allotments play in promoting overall wellbeing.

Furthermore, the survey found that 80.3% of plot holders believe that their allotment has helped them build social connections, which is crucial in an era of rising stress and shrinking green spaces. Moreover, 89.2% of respondents reported that they consume more fresh fruits and vegetables as a result of growing their own produce in their allotments.

Mike Farrell, Chairman of the National Allotment Society, commented on the survey findings, saying, “An allotment isn’t just a piece of land – it’s a sanctuary, a source of pride, and a powerful tool for public health. We’re calling on policymakers, councils, and planners to recognize the value allotments bring to communities and ensure they are protected for future generations.”

In addition to highlighting the benefits of allotment gardening, the Society is also urging local authorities to invest in allotment infrastructure, improve access in underserved areas, and explore partnerships with schools, charities, and social prescribing networks.

Throughout National Allotments Week, various events and member webinars will showcase the positive impact of allotment life, from growing your own produce to building new friendships.
