The Legacy Youth Zone has a transformative impact on young lives.

Legacy Youth Zone, a part of the OnSide network of youth zones, has been making a positive impact on the lives of young people in Croydon since its establishment. This was exemplified by the recent success story of Mohammed and his sister Astou, who moved to England from Senegal in February 2023.

Upon their arrival in the UK, the siblings had a limited understanding of the English language. However, with the help of the dedicated staff at Legacy, they were able to learn English and adapt to their new environment. Volunteers Rose and Patricia played a crucial role in supporting the siblings during their time at Legacy Youth Zone.

Thanks to the support and guidance provided by Legacy, Mohammed and Astou were able to excel in their studies and secure good jobs and college placements. Mohammed, in particular, was able to secure a job as a kitchen porter and was recently promoted to a grill chef position.

Legacy Youth Zone offers a safe and fun space for young people between the ages of 8-19 (or up to 25 with additional needs) in Croydon. With a membership fee of just £5 a year and 50p per visit, young people have access to over 20 activities, including a state-of-the-art gym, kitchen, recording studio, and MUGA pitch.

Mohammed’s success story is a testament to the great work being done by Legacy Youth Zone. Despite facing language barriers and cultural differences, the siblings were able to thrive in their new environment with the support of Legacy. The youth zone provided them with a safe learning environment, and Mohammed also found a passion for sports, particularly football.

Legacy Youth Zone recently shared Mohammed’s story on their YouTube channel, showcasing how the organization goes above and beyond to provide tailored support to meet the needs of individual young people. Mohammed’s story is also a testament to the supportive and empowering environment at Legacy, which encourages young people to succeed and become active and kind members of society.

The volunteers at Legacy, such as Rose and Patricia, are highly valued for their essential role in the functioning of the youth zone. Their dedication and hard work contribute to the success of young people like Mohammed and Astou.
