New UK-Wide Model Aims to Improve Children’s Palliative Care Services
London, UK – Tuesday, September 16, 2025 – Children’s palliative care services in the UK have long faced challenges in providing comprehensive and coordinated support to families in need. Recent research in the North West has revealed major gaps in social care, community nursing, and access to information and advice for families with children facing life-limiting conditions. In response, the Kentown model has been developed to bridge these gaps and ensure that families receive compassionate and coordinated care whenever and wherever it is needed.
The goal of Kentown Support, the organisation behind the Kentown model, is to enhance the provision of community palliative care for children and their families across the UK. By collaborating with professionals, other organisations, and Integrated Care Boards, Kentown Support aims to provide families with the right care at the right time in their own homes. This unique and UK-wide model is working closely with local services to create a more accessible, coordinated, and family-focused approach.
Launched as a pilot project in 2022 and funded by The Kentown Wizard Foundation, the Kentown project in Lancashire and South Cumbria has already made significant strides in improving nursing, respite, and social care for families. By working alongside and complementing existing services, the pilot team of six Palliative Care Community Nurse Specialists, six Family Support Workers, and three Family Coordinators has been able to provide a more integrated package of care.
In order to continue and expand this vital work across the UK, The Kentown Wizard Foundation has recently established and funded Kentown Support as an independent not-for-profit organisation. Starting in September 2025, Kentown Support will continue to fund its charity partners, Together for Short Lives and Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, for an additional two years. These charities will continue to work with the Kentown nurses based in five acute NHS trusts across Lancashire and South Cumbria, allowing them to deliver comprehensive community palliative care to families in need.
The Kentown Children’s Palliative Care Programme Impact Evaluation, led by Edge Hill University, is set to be released soon and will assess the impact of the programme on families and children with life-limiting conditions. This evaluation will provide important insights into the positive difference that the Kentown model has made and will continue to make in the lives of children and families across the UK.
