“Dr Jane Goodall’s Legacy Remembered”

Renowned conservationist and primatologist, Dame Dr Jane Goodall, has passed away at the age of 91 on Friday 3 October, 2025. Her passing has been mourned by animal lovers and conservationists all over the world, as she leaves behind an incredible legacy that has forever changed our relationship with animals and the natural world.

Jane’s groundbreaking research with chimpanzees allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of their emotions and social lives by simply looking into their eyes. Her tireless advocacy for animals and the environment has also helped us realize the impact of our daily decisions on the planet.

In a CBS News interview, Dr Goodall once said, “Since young girls began reading about my early life and my career with the chimps, many, many, many of them have told me that they went into conservation or animal behaviour because of me. I sincerely hope that it will help to create more interest and fascination in the natural world.”

Her influence has reached generations of conservationists, including the team at International Animal Rescue. Phily Day, Head of Supporter Care at International Animal Rescue, shared her personal story of how a letter from Jane had a profound impact on her life. “Jane had a profound impact on my life. A week after receiving a letter from Jane, encouraging me not to give up on my dream of working with orangutans, I got the job at International Animal Rescue. A job that, 11 years on, has seen me do things ‘young Phily’ would never have dreamed of,” she said.

In honor of Jane’s legacy, International Animal Rescue will continue its mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and reintroduce animals in need, protect and restore their habitats, and inspire young people to become future guardians of nature. As Jane once said, “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

The organization’s President, Alan Knight OBE, and CEO, Gavin Bruce, expressed their deepest condolences to Jane’s family, friends, and the global community she has inspired. They also pledged to continue making a difference in the world and work with communities, governments, and partners to preserve nature for future generations.

Jane Goodall’s light will continue to shine on through the work of International Animal Rescue and all those who have been inspired by her passion and dedication to the natural world.
