The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has partnered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to offer three complimentary trainings in celebration of UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week. This annual event aims to raise awareness and celebrate progress made towards media and information literacy for all.
In today’s world of increasing mistrust, misinformation and media avoidance, newsrooms must equip themselves with strategies to reinforce credibility, transparency and civic value. Through this collaboration with UNESCO, WAN-IFRA will provide practical and high-impact training for news executives and editorial operations. This will help news organizations make journalism’s processes more visible, engage with their audience more meaningfully, and build public trust more substantially.
The training programme will consist of two free online sessions and one in-person workshop, which will be held at WAN-IFRA’s upcoming Newsroom Summit in Copenhagen on 18-19 November 2025. The first online session, titled “From Policy to Strategy: Building Your News Literacy Roadmap,” will take place on 12 November 2025 at 17:00 CET. The second online session, titled “Behind the Byline: Transparency and Truth in a Polarised Media Environment,” will be held on 25 November 2025 at 17:00 CET. The in-person workshop will take place on 17 November 2025 from 14:00-17:00 CET at the premises of JP Politiken in Copenhagen.
This training is aimed at senior editors, newsroom executives, media policy and audience engagement leads, as well as attendees of the Newsroom Summit who wish to take their participation further through the live and interactive workshop.
Those interested in attending the online sessions can register in advance on the WAN-IFRA website, and participants of the Newsroom Summit can request access to the in-person workshop by emailing mediapolicy@wan-ifra.org.
WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers, is a global organization that represents 3,000 news publishers and technology companies, as well as 60 national publishers’ associations. With a mission to protect the rights of journalists and publishers around the world to operate independent media, WAN-IFRA provides its members with expertise and services to innovate and prosper in a digital world and fulfill their crucial role in society. The association recognizes the essential role of news literacy and has defined it in their Media Literacy Policy as “the ability to actively seek out credible news, recognize bias, understand how journalism is produced, and apply critical thinking in civic, educational and professional contexts.”
UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy initiative sees media and information literacy as a core skill set that enables individuals to critically engage with information, navigate digital environments safely, and build trust in information ecosystems. This is crucial in the fight against disinformation and for protecting freedom of expression and access to information.
