“Concert Honoring the Life of Roger Hayward Set to Commemorate a Remarkable Legacy”

Sheffield Chamber Orchestra to dedicate concert to late founder and chairman, Roger Hayward

The Sheffield Chamber Orchestra’s upcoming concert on November 29th will be a special tribute to their late founder and chairman, Roger Hayward. Hayward, who passed away in October 2025 at the age of almost 97, was deeply connected to the orchestra and played an integral role in its formation and success.

Hayward’s journey with the orchestra began when he arrived in Sheffield to study Metallurgy at the university. He brought his violin with him and a determination to keep music at the heart of his life. Under the direction of Professor Stuart Deas, the then-known University Chamber Orchestra took shape, with Hayward’s commitment helping to lay the foundations for what would eventually become the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra. It was during this time that he met Kathleen Gabbitas, also a violinist, and their shared love for music blossomed into a shared life. The couple married in 1955, raised three children, and continued to rehearse and perform in concerts together.

Hayward’s loyalty and musicianship were unparalleled, as he played with the orchestra for over 50 years. Kathleen, who eventually retired from performing, remained a part of the SCO family and continued to attend concerts and offer her support. Even after Kathleen’s passing in 2022, Hayward remained a familiar face at concerts across Sheffield, particularly at the Crucible Theatre.

Beyond his love for music, Hayward cherished his family life, which was enriched by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed exploring the beautiful landscapes of the region through his love for walking. In his later years, Hayward resided in a retirement home, but his warmth, curiosity, and generosity of spirit never waned.

As the orchestra prepares for their November concert, they remember Hayward with deep gratitude. His passion, dedication, and quiet leadership were instrumental in shaping the orchestra into what it is today. It is an honor for them to pay tribute to him at this performance.

The November concert, titled “Celebrating 75 Years: In Memory of Roger Hayward,” will take place at 7:30pm on Saturday, November 29th at All Saints Church in Ecclesall. The program will feature works by Mendelssohn, Wagner, and Telemann, as well as the world premiere of a new piece by British composer Dominic McGonigal.
