SocialBox.Biz has issued a call to companies, urging them to re-use Windows 10 laptops and surplus IT equipment through their organization in the City of Westminster and beyond. According to SocialBox.Biz, even companies without access to these items can still make a positive impact on society through their impact plans.

Windows 10 continues to dominate the global market, with millions of computers still running the now-expired operating system. This is due to many older devices not meeting the strict hardware criteria for the newer Windows 11.

In an effort to address this issue and make a positive impact in the community, SocialBox.Biz has launched their “Call Before You Scrap It” campaign. The campaign appeals to companies to donate their surplus hardware to SocialBox.Biz rather than recycling or disposing of it. The donated hardware is repurposed with open source software and distributed to disadvantaged individuals who cannot afford computer equipment or software. This allows them to access education, job searches, and communication tools.

According to SocialBox.Biz, there is a particular need for surplus Google Chromebooks and MacBooks with larger screens to better support older recipients with visual impairments. This was demonstrated earlier this year when a beneficiary of the C4WS Homeless Project, Elaine, was able to rebuild her life and pursue college studies thanks to a donated laptop.

A spokesperson for SocialBox.Biz stated, “There are countless benefits for companies repurposing unwanted IT. Redundant hardware can become a source of positive community change, preventing waste, lowering emissions, and providing lifeline technology to those who need it the most.”

Aside from the social impact, there are also significant environmental benefits to reusing old hardware. For instance, by donating just 500 unwanted computers, a business can prevent 155 tonnes of CO₂ emissions – equivalent to removing 60 cars from UK roads for a year. This is much more sustainable than recycling, which is energy-intensive and lacking dedicated IT smelters in the UK. In terms of carbon absorption, the annual emissions savings from IT reuse equals the work done by approximately 6,460 mature trees.

SocialBox.Biz is open to partnerships and welcomes enquiries from organisations interested in learning more about sustainable IT reuse and the wider impact of inclusion. Their “Call Before You Scrap It” campaign also aligns with the European Week for Waste Reduction (Nov 22–30), which aims to raise awareness about electronic waste and how organisations can help tackle this issue.

SocialBox.Biz accepts unwanted laptops, Apple iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks as part of its reuse programme. Participating companies will receive tailored impact plans, marketing support, and case studies suitable for annual reporting, demonstrating their meaningful contributions to computer access inclusion and planet protection.

For companies without access to items to donate, SocialBox.Biz offers impact plans that can still increase their social impact. More information and case studies can be found on their website: https://www.socialbox.biz/corporate-impact/ and https://www.socialbox.biz/news-posts/.
