MedicAlert has recently launched an innovative Safe and Found programme aimed at providing assistance to individuals living with dementia and other cognitive impairments.
In the United Kingdom, there are currently 944,000 people living with dementia, with approximately 40,000 reported missing each year. Recognizing the urgent need for a solution to aid in the search for missing individuals with dementia, MedicAlert has developed the Safe and Found programme, which works in collaboration with the police to ensure the safe return of those who are reported missing, reuniting them with their families.
The programme offers a valuable lifeline for individuals living with dementia, promoting a sense of safety, independence, and a more fulfilling life, while providing invaluable peace of mind for both the individuals and their caregivers.
As part of the programme, the first year of MedicAlert membership is entirely free, thanks to sponsorship from The McLay Dementia Trust and matching funding provided by MedicAlert. This membership enables individuals with dementia to securely store their digital Herbert Protocol, ensuring quick access by emergency services. The Herbert Protocol, widely utilized by police forces nationwide, is a comprehensive document that can be completed by the members or their caregivers. It includes crucial information that assists in locating missing persons, such as recent photographs, significant locations, routines, connections, medical details, and more.
The implementation of the Herbert Protocol has proven to be an effective strategy for reducing search time and increasing the likelihood of finding the individual safe and well. MedicAlert has now streamlined this process by offering emergency services quick access to critical information when it matters most.
MedicAlert, in conjunction with The McLay Dementia Trust, is proud to offer free first-year MedicAlert membership to over 800 individuals living with dementia across the UK.

In addition to the Safe and Found programme, MedicAlert has introduced Carer ID and the storage of Emergency Care Plans to provide vital support for caregivers, ensuring that their loved ones receive continuous and appropriate care even in the event of a caregiver’s accident.
