An increasing number of UK General Practitioners are expressing interest in relocating to Australia, resulting in a surge of applications and enquiries received by Australian medical clinics and recruiters.
As the NHS faces mounting pressure and junior doctors embark on strikes for better pay, Australia is emerging as an attractive destination, according to Gemma Gough, the Managing Director of Health Recruitment Australia.
Having migrated from Guernsey, UK, nearly six years ago and working as a practice management leader in South Australia, Ms Gough understands the appeal firsthand. She remarked, “It’s easy to comprehend why numerous UK doctors are choosing to move to Australia or seriously considering pursuing their careers abroad.”
She continued, “The UK healthcare system has been grappling with concerns about working conditions for many years, which were further amplified by the pandemic. While remuneration is a significant factor, the doctors we converse with also prioritise their overall lifestyle, an area where Australia outshines the UK.”
Reflecting on her personal experience, Ms Gough admitted that moving across the world presented challenges but stated unequivocally, “I have absolutely no regrets – Australia is an exceptional place to forge a career, build a family, and create a fulfilling life.”
The British Medical Association is currently leading industrial action against the NHS, citing a gradual erosion of pay for junior doctors over the past 15 years, leading many to seek opportunities elsewhere. Ms Gough acknowledged the difficulties faced by the UK health system and highlighted the eagerness of Australian clinics and hospitals to address their own pressing need for qualified doctors.
“Australia is also grappling with a severe shortage of doctors, necessitating clinics and hospitals to search overseas for General Practitioners who can cater to the growing demands of local communities,” she explained. “UK doctors are an excellent fit due to the relatively smooth transition process, but more importantly, there is a remarkable cultural alignment between the two nations.”
Polly Large recently commenced her work as a GP at AHA Clinics, a medical practice in South Australia, following her relocation from the UK three months ago. Emphasising the decision-making process, she said, “Moving to the other side of the world to build my career and life was not a decision I took lightly. However, after careful consideration, the opportunities in Australia proved too enticing to resist.”
Acknowledging the time-consuming nature and associated challenges of the relocation process, Ms Large expressed gratitude for the strong support she received at every step. Now firmly established within the local community, she enthused, “Being on the ground and experiencing life here, I am thoroughly enjoying my new home and eagerly anticipate what the future holds in Australia.”
