Tonio Schachinger was awarded the German Book Prize 2023 for his book “Echtzeitalter”.

On Monday 16 October, 2023, Tonio Schachinger was awarded the German Book Prize for his novel “Echtzeitalter” (“Realtimes”), published by Rowohlt Verlag. The jury praised the novel’s subtle irony which mirrors the political and social conditions of the present.

The jury, consisting of Shila Behjat (journalist and publicist), Heinz Drügh (Goethe University Frankfurt am Main), Melanie Mühl (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), Lisa Schumacher (bookshop “Steinmetz’sche Buchhandlung”, Offenbach), jury spokesperson Katharina Teutsch (independent critic), Florian Valerius (bookshop “Gegenlicht Buchhandlung”, Trier) and Matthias Weichelt (Sinn und Form literary journal), was impressed by the book’s narrative brilliance and contemporary approach to the question of literature’s place in society.

The other nominated novels for the German Book Prize 2023 were Terézia Mora’s “Muna oder Die Hälfte des Lebens” (Luchterhand Literaturverlag, August 2023), Necati Öziri’s “Vatermal” (claassen, July 2023), Anne Rabe’s “Die Möglichkeit von Glück” (Klett-Cotta, March 2023), Sylvie Schenk’s “Maman” (Carl Hanser Verlag, February 2023) and Ulrike Sterblich’s “Drifter” (Rowohlt Hundert Augen, July 2023).

The main sponsor of the German Book Prize is the Deutsche Bank Stiftung (Deutsche Bank Foundation) and the award is also supported by Frankfurter Buchmesse and the city of Frankfurt am Main, as well as the television network Deutsche Welle.

The award ceremony was held in Frankfurt am Main and a press photo of Tonio Schachinger will be available for download at around 8:30 p.m. at www.boersenverein.de/pressefotos.
