American singer-songwriter Patti Smith graced the city of Matera with her presence last month, as she performed at the Gervasio Auditorium for the 30th anniversary celebration of the city’s inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Smith, who had been wanting to visit Matera for 40 years, expressed her admiration for the city and its stunning views.

During her stay, the singer also made a tour of the Sassi, the historic district of Matera known for its ancient cave dwellings, and visited some of the locations featured in director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s iconic film ‘The Gospel according to St. Matthew’. The 60th anniversary of the film will be celebrated next year.

When asked about her iconic songs, Smith shared her hope for humanity to find a way to communicate and rebuild a peaceful world. The singer also performed at the Petruzzelli Theatre in Bari during her visit to Italy.
