SOS Africa’s Elvino Awarded Full Rugby Scholarship by Durban High School
Tuesday 16 April, 2024 – SOS Africa, a UK-based charity that provides education and support to underprivileged children in Africa, is proud to announce that one of their students, Elvino, has been awarded a full rugby scholarship by Durban High School.
Elvino first joined SOS Africa’s Grabouw Education Programme in Grade 1 in 2014. Over the years, he has shown exceptional talent in rugby and was recruited by Drostdy Technical College in January 2021. There, he excelled both academically and on the rugby field. His skills caught the eye of a Durban High School Scout during pre-season matches, and he was promptly offered a full scholarship to cover the remainder of his high school years at one of the top colleges in the country. Within days, Elvino accepted the offer, booked his flights, and embarked on an exciting new chapter in his life.
“I am very excited about this opportunity and cannot wait to play for Durban High School. Rugby is my passion, and my dream is to play it professionally one day. I am grateful to my SOS Africa sponsors for always believing in me, and I hope to make them proud,” said Elvino.
Elvino’s journey has been a collective effort, with unconditional support from his family and friends in his local community. At the heart of this support system are his parents, Elizabeth and John, who are also his number one fans.
“Elvino’s family and friends are overjoyed at this news! Durban High School is a fantastic school that will provide him with incredible opportunities now and after he graduates. We are immensely grateful to SOS Africa for their support since Elvino was six years old in Grade 1. Without their help, his future would have been uncertain. We know that Elvino is eager to stay in touch with Matt and his SOS Africa family,” said Elizabeth and John, Elvino’s parents.
Elvino wasted no time in sharing this exciting news with his SOS Africa family at Grabouw High School. Within a few days of joining Durban High School, he helped their rugby team win one of their opening matches of the new season.
“It has been a privilege to witness Elvino’s journey from the classrooms of Grabouw Primary School to the rugby pitches of Drostdy and now Durban High. This remarkable young man is a shining example of hard work and dedication and truly deserves this life-changing opportunity. Elvino is an inspiration to us all, and we wish him all the success in his bright future. And if we have to become Sharks fans one day, then so be it!” said SOS Africa Founder, Matt Crowcombe.
