National Literacy Trust Survey Finds Children’s Reading Enjoyment at Lowest Level in Almost Twenty Years
According to the annual survey conducted by the National Literacy Trust, children’s reading enjoyment has reached its lowest level in almost twenty years. The survey, which was carried out between January and March 2023, revealed that over half of children between the ages of eight and 18 do not enjoy reading in their free time.
This concerning trend has sparked worry among educators and parents alike, as reading plays a crucial role in a child’s development and academic success. However, amidst this worrying trend, there is a glimmer of hope in the form of a new book by author Kath Radford.
Released just in time to inspire a love for reading in children, “LUNARDIUM” by Kath Radford is a thrilling adventure that is sure to capture the imagination of young readers. The book is tailored for children aged 8-13 and follows the journey of PollyAnna Perkins, a young girl living in a seaside town with her mother and grandfather.
“PollyAnna’s only wish is to have a father, but her life takes a dramatic turn when she is sucked into a vortex and finds herself on the dark side of the moon,” the synopsis reads. “Join her and her eccentric group of friends as they battle against the evil emperor Astronomus in his quest to conquer Earth and rule the Universe.”
With exciting plot twists, thrilling battles, and a heart-stopping secret, “LUNARDIUM” is sure to captivate young readers and reignite their love for reading.
Author Kath Radford was inspired by her own childhood experiences growing up in a small seaside town in North Yorkshire. Her imagination was fueled by exploring the dark and mysterious corners of her parents’ pub, as well as searching for a secret tunnel said to have been used by smugglers.
After a successful career in nursing, including being awarded the McKeown gold medal for her contribution to the field, Kath returned to her love for writing and has since published several short stories and a crime thriller. “LUNARDIUM” is her first venture into children’s literature, and it has already received rave reviews.
Critics have praised the book for its engaging characters, fast-paced action, and overall sense of fun. “There is a lovely exuberance to this book,” says Jane Adams, a reader from the Literary Consultancy. “It’s enjoyable and warm, with a lot of action and movement. Perfect for middle-grade readers.”
Parents and children alike have also given the book 5-star reviews on Amazon, with one parent saying, “My granddaughter loved it!” and another reader eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
To celebrate the release of “LUNARDIUM,” Kath Radford will be hosting several Meet the Author events in schools and libraries. These events will give children the opportunity to meet the author and get a signed copy of the book.
