PCC BakkiSilicon hf. has been awarded the ISCC Carbon Footprint Certification for the production of essential raw material, silicon.

PCC subsidiary, PCC BakkiSilicon hf., has become the first silicon producer in the world to receive certification for its greenhouse gas balance of silicon metal in accordance with the new ISCC Carbon Footprint Certification (CFC) standard. This certification attests to PCC’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible production practices.

The certification was issued after an independent audit at PCC BakkiSilicon hf.’s production site in Húsavík, Iceland. The audit confirmed a greenhouse gas footprint of 3,102.56 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per metric ton of silicon metal during the twelve-month reference period from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023. This is significantly lower than the global industry average of 10.9 kilograms CO2 equivalent, and PCC BakkiSilicon hf. attributes this achievement to its exclusive use of renewable energy sources, primarily geothermal energy, in its production process.

Dr. Peter Wenzel, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of PCC SE, the parent company of PCC BakkiSilicon hf., stated, “The fact that our subsidiary has become a global pioneer in the industry by being audited in line with the ISCC standard for carbon footprint certification (CFC) confirms the validity of our strategy of setting global standards in climate protection with PCC BakkiSilicon hf.”

In addition to its commitment to sustainable production, PCC BakkiSilicon hf. also faces significant economic pressure as it competes directly with Chinese silicon producers. These producers often use CO2-intensive methods and even engage in forced labor, which allows them to offer lower prices in the market. As a result, PCC has been advocating for political support to level the playing field and ensure fair competition.

Despite these challenges, PCC continues to innovate and expand its operations. The company’s startup, PCC Thorion GmbH, is currently developing a highly efficient battery anode material using silicon nanopowder. This innovation, along with PCC BakkiSilicon hf.’s low carbon footprint, sets a global benchmark for sustainable silicon production.

PCC SE, headquartered in Duisburg, Germany, is the parent company of the globally active PCC Group, which employs around 3,300 people. The group has core competencies in the production of chemical feed stocks, specialty chemicals, silicon and silicon derivatives, and container logistics. PCC SE focuses on increasing the enterprise value of its portfolio companies through sustainable investments and the creation of new value. In fiscal 2023, the PCC Group generated consolidated sales of €994 million and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of €112 million, with capital expenditures of €142 million.

PCC SE’s commitment to sustainable and responsible production practices, as exemplified by PCC BakkiSilicon hf., sets a high standard for the industry and reinforces the company’s reputation as a leader in the global market. For more information about PCC, visit https://www.pcc.eu.
