The future of design is constantly evolving, driven by inspiration and a desire to create spaces that reflect our lives and aspirations. As we look towards tomorrow’s possibilities, it is important to combine creativity with purpose, resulting in environments that resonate with our lifestyles. That is exactly what the finalists of the SBID International Design Awards 2024 have achieved, showcasing the latest trends that are shaping the interior design industry.
The awards, which will be held in November at the Royal Lancaster London, will celebrate the best of global design talent. “The awards ceremony this year is bigger and better than ever before,” says Dr Vanessa Brady OBE, founder of the SBID. “We are excited to see the remarkable innovation and creativity in this year’s entries.”
The finalists have demonstrated the power of design to transform spaces into reflections of our values and lifestyles. From quiet luxury to intelligent living, here are some of the key trends that have emerged from this year’s entries:
Quiet Luxury
One of the dominant trends in fashion, Quiet Luxury, has made its way into interior design. This trend focuses on investing in high-quality, minimalist pieces that have timeless appeal. “The core of this trend is about emphasising investment in high quality, minimalist pieces that have timeless appeal,” says Lavinia Engleman, SBID International Design Awards Director. “Often using neutral colour palettes and fine materials that naturally have aesthetic longevity.”
Two of the finalists that have incorporated this trend into their designs are Buckrail and Wadham Gardens. Buckrail’s design balances sophistication and functionality, using custom furnishings and natural materials to enhance warmth and ambiance. Similarly, Wadham Gardens embraces clean lines, open spaces, and a neutral palette to create a harmonious environment.
Nature’s Embrace
Biophilic design, also known as Nature’s Embrace, focuses on creating spaces that connect deeply with the natural world, promoting tranquillity and well-being. “We are seeing the maturation of biophilic design,” says Engleman. “Designers are now using fewer plants in residential settings and focusing more on integrating and showcasing natural materials in the building and furniture.”
One of the finalists that has embraced this trend is SK Residence, which blends nature-inspired elements with contemporary luxury. The design features a wood parametric ceiling in the entrance, reminiscent of water fluidity, and a large green wall in the family room, emphasizing the connection to nature. Similarly, Bel Air Mansion delivers every aspect of luxury family living alongside breathtaking views and indoor/outdoor living.
Adaptive Living
Adaptive Living prioritises designing homes with versatile areas that accommodate various functions and activities. This trend emphasises the need for flexible and adaptable spaces that can easily be reconfigured to meet the dynamic needs of contemporary families. “Invest in movable partitions to create flexible and adaptable spaces that can be easily reconfigured,” suggests Engleman. “Opt for open-plan layouts to enhance the sense of openness and provide versatility in how spaces are used.”
Two of the finalists that have incorporated this trend into their designs are West 53rd Street and Thames City. West 53rd Street features interconnected zones and adaptable design, while Thames City creates environments that easily adapt to various family needs and activities.
Intelligent Living
The future of residential design is smart, as evidenced by the SBID International Design Awards 2024. “Intelligent Living incorporates cutting-edge technologies that enhance convenience, security, and efficiency,” says Engleman. One of the finalists that has embraced this trend is Polo House, which showcases state-of-the-art integrated smart systems. Another is Homeplay’s The World’s Smallest High-Performance Speakers, measuring just 2.2cm x 3.7cm x 1.1cm, which can fill an entire room with sound.
Integrating smart home systems and advanced technology has become a must for today’s homes. “Intelligent Living is not just about incorporating the latest gadgets into a home,” says Engleman. “It’s about creating a seamless, efficient living environment where technology enhances every aspect of daily life.”
