Welch The Florist Celebrated with ‘Highly Commended’ at Midlands Family Business Awards

Welch the Florist, a fifth-generation family business from Nottingham, has proudly earned the ‘Highly Commended’ recognition in the customer excellence category at the 2024 Midlands Family Business Awards, held at the Athena in Leicester.

The Midlands Family Business Awards, which marked their 12th year, celebrate the best family-run businesses across the UK. The event took place on 3rd October, with proceeds going to the Brain Tumour Charity.

Founded in 1920 in Long Eaton, Welch the Florist is one of Nottingham’s most enduring businesses, known for maintaining its family values. In 1973, when Tony Shaw became a director, his expertise and passion for horticulture helped the business stand out by offering meticulously crafted floral bouquets.

Now under the leadership of Tony’s son Gareth, Welch has expanded by merging six former florists and becoming the leading flower delivery service in Nottinghamshire, serving customers through both Welch and Interflora.

Gareth expressed his gratitude, stating: “This is the first time in our 104-year history that we’ve entered an award. Being shortlisted as a finalist came as a complete surprise, and to be highly commended among so many fantastic businesses is truly flattering.”

Charlotte Perkins, Group Managing Director of Wilsons, who organised the awards, commented: “The judges faced difficult decisions in selecting winners across the board. With such impressive entries, there were many discussions about the Winners and Highly Commended in each category. Every finalist should be proud of what they have accomplished.”

Gareth continued, “Being highly commended recognises the whole team’s dedication to excellence and is a testament to the hard work, passion, and expertise offered by the Welch the Florist team.”
