The International Trade Alliance has gained a new prominent partner as Lotte from South Korea joins as an associate member, welcomed by EMD.

European Marketing Distribution (EMD) is pleased to announce its newest associate member, Lotte from South Korea. With this partnership, EMD continues its dynamic growth and expansion, representing the interests of 12 companies across three continents.

EMD, founded in 1989, focuses on international procurement of Private Label products and connecting its vast network of suppliers to its members worldwide. With Lotte, a heavyweight in the Asian markets, joining its ranks, EMD gains even more momentum and opportunities.

The Lotte Group, a conglomerate operating in 30 countries, brings its expertise in retail, chemicals, construction, tourism, and services to EMD. With a focus on food, beverages, and retail, Lotte’s total turnover exceeds 50 billion euros, with 20 billion euros generated by food and retail alone. The company also owns popular European confectionery brands such as Guylian from Belgium.

Through this partnership, EMD and Lotte can recognize and take advantage of intercontinental opportunities, opening access to new markets and working closely with EMD procurement teams.

According to EMD Partnership Statutes, consumers in Asia and Europe can now benefit from this new cooperation. EMD member companies will have more opportunities to source and market exciting product concepts in Asia, while Lotte’s purchasing teams gain access to European manufacturers and their goods business.

EMD’s Managing Director, Philippe Gruyters, welcomes Lotte to the alliance, stating, “We warmly welcome the new associate member Lotte to our intercontinental alliance and look forward to a successful collaboration.” Sunghyun Kang, CEO of Lotte Mart and Lotte Super, also expresses excitement about the partnership, stating, “EMD was our partner of choice from the very beginning.”

Lotte’s high status in its Asian home markets is evident by its key figures. With over 1,100 stores and an annual turnover of 12 billion euros, Lotte Mart & Super in South Korea, Vietnam, and Indonesia is a major player. The company operates 60 department stores, 161 hypermarkets, and 400 supermarkets in South Korea, and has a joint venture with convenience store specialist 7-Eleven, which operates nearly 14,000 stores in South Korea. Lotte procures goods for this dense distribution network and aims to expand its private label range through its partnership with EMD.

The origin of the company name “Lotte” can be traced back to the admiration of the South Korean company founder for the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his main character Lotte in the novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther.”
