The humble jigsaw puzzle has been a beloved pastime for over 250 years, and its popularity continues to thrive. With International Puzzle Day quickly approaching, ITV This Morning’s resident GP, Doctor Zoe Williams, shares her insights on the benefits of this centuries-old activity.
“Puzzles provide a sanctuary of mindfulness. They anchor our thoughts in the present moment,” explains Dr. Zoe. In today’s fast-paced world, where distractions are constant, completing a jigsaw puzzle allows our minds to take a much-needed break.
“By focusing on a single task rather than multitasking, completing a puzzle can bring a sense of peace and relaxation,” continues Dr. Zoe. The feeling of accomplishment that comes from completing a puzzle can also have a positive impact on other aspects of our lives.
In addition to promoting overall well-being, jigsaw puzzles also offer cognitive benefits. “They are great brain exercises that improve memory and increase IQ,” Dr. Zoe says. In the short term, puzzles can reduce stress, improve concentration, and enhance problem-solving skills. In the long run, they can also improve resilience, patience, and foster a sharper mind. Multiple studies have shown that regularly completing puzzles can even reduce the risk of developing dementia.
As we live in a digital age, maintaining social connections has become even more crucial. This is why the number of puzzle gatherings, from competitive events to casual sessions over coffee, is on the rise.
“Puzzles are a brilliant icebreaker activity. They offer a shared focus, breaking the ice and making conversations flow effortlessly,” says Dr. Zoe. “And, very importantly, they are for everyone, no matter your age! They are great for sharing stories, bonding time, and creating lasting memories with loved ones.”
Dr. Zoe Williams is an ambassador for Ravensburger’s Positively Puzzling campaign, which celebrates the benefits of jigsaw puzzles for all ages.
