Antigua and Barbuda Youth Orchestra Tutors to Embark on Cultural Exchange Program with Kimichi School in Birmingham

Birmingham, UK – On Sunday, May 26, 2024, the Kimichi School in Birmingham announced its partnership with the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra (ABYSO) for an exciting cultural and artistic exchange program. The ABYSO tutors will be visiting the Kimichi School from 15/05/2024 to 05/06/2024 as part of a broader initiative to foster cultural understanding and artistic collaboration between Antigua and Barbuda and the United Kingdom.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for the ABYSO, which was founded over twenty years ago by Sally Alexander, MBE. With the support of Her Excellency Karen Mae-Hill, OBE, High Commissioner to Antigua and Barbuda, and the Kanneh-Mason family, who have Antiguan heritage, the ABYSO has experienced tremendous growth and success. The visit of the ABYSO tutors to Kimichi School is a testament to this growth and serves as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, skills, and experiences in the field of music education.

The three-week program will offer students at Kimichi School a unique opportunity to learn from and interact with the highly skilled tutors from the ABYSO. Through workshops, masterclasses, and rehearsals, the students will gain valuable insights into the world of orchestral music and develop their musical abilities under the guidance of these esteemed professionals. Additionally, the ABYSO tutors will have the opportunity to engage with local community orchestras, including the Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra and the Sinfonia of Birmingham.

Sally Alexander, the founder of ABYSO, expresses her gratitude to Her Excellency Karen Mae-Hill for her unwavering support in making this exchange program a reality. She also extends her appreciation to the staff and students of Kimichi School for their enthusiasm and willingness to engage in this cultural exchange. The collaboration between the ABYSO and Kimichi School is expected to lay the foundation for a long-lasting partnership and future collaborations.

The impact of this exchange program is poised to resonate far beyond the three-week duration, enriching the lives of students and inspiring future generations of musicians. This collaboration is one amongst many, including partnerships with ABRSM and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, which showcase the ABYSO’s dedication to providing young musicians from Antigua and Barbuda with opportunities to develop their talents.
