On 12th October, 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair will be illuminated by the vibrant colors and powerful narratives of African art, courtesy of TAAH (The African Art Hub). Three exceptional artists – Theresah Ankomah, Ibrahim Bamidele, and Frederick Botchway – will be showcasing their unique interpretations of contemporary African expression at Somerset House, London.
Since its inauguration in October’s Frieze Week, 1-54 Art Fair has become a platform for contemporary African art, promoting different perspectives and diasporic experiences as well as leading international galleries specializing in this genre. This year, TAAH will be joining the event, aiming to foster meaningful engagements between artists and collectors.
The works of these three artists explore life, identity politics, trade, and geopolitics, touching on class, capitalism, racial identity, and familiar iconographies. Ibrahim Bamidele is a master of visual storytelling, creating captivating portraits in vibrant Ankara fabrics, while Frederick Botchway merges traditional oil painting with photography and editing techniques. Theresah Ankomah’s works span performative installations, sculpture, weaving, and more, examining the complexities of craft, trade, and geopolitics in everyday materials.
TAAH’s Managing Director Abraham Abia and Project Manager Pratiti Shah have curated this exhibition to reflect not just the individual voices of the artists, but also the rich tapestry of African culture, history, and contemporary life. Visitors to the 1-54 Art Fair can expect an immersive journey into the intricate tapestry of Africa’s past, present, and future.
