MVW Lechtenberg Projektentwicklungs- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft GmbH, a leading consulting firm specializing in alternative fuels for the cement and related industries, has announced a partnership with Empower, a provider of innovative traceability solutions, to launch a transformative plastic waste management project in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The project, which aims to process approximately 3 million tonnes of municipal solid waste per year and produce refuse-derived fuels (RDF) in six governorates, is a joint venture between MVW Lechtenberg & Partner Middle East and SIRC. SIRC, the executive arm for waste management from the Government of Saudi Arabia, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) in the Kingdom and a key player in the initiative.
According to MVW Lechtenberg GmbH, the project has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1,791,300 tonnes per year once fully implemented.
Empower’s blockchain technology will play a crucial role in this project, providing transparent tracking and management of plastic waste from collection to recycling and RDF conversion. This system will allow real-time monitoring of waste management activities and provide valuable data for stakeholders including municipalities, governments, and environmental organizations.
One of the key innovations in this project is the integration of Plastic Credits and RDF systems. Plastic Credits incentivize responsible waste disposal by providing financial rewards for verified plastic waste collection and recycling activities. These credits can be traded or sold to entities aiming to neutralize their plastic footprints or comply with environmental regulations, promoting a more circular economy.
The verification of these credits will be based on the GPx traceability standard developed by GPN Corporation, a member of the International Green Purchasing Network (IGPN). This standard ensures high levels of transparency, traceability, and accountability, which are crucial for building trust and securing participation from various stakeholders.
Dirk Lechtenberg, from MVW Lechtenberg GmbH, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to collaborate with Empower and SIRC on this important project that will have a significant impact on plastic waste management in Saudi Arabia. Our goal is to promote sustainable practices and innovative solutions in waste management, and we believe this project will be a great step towards achieving that.”
Knut Landsverk, from Empower, also shared his excitement for the project, saying, “We are proud to be a part of this initiative and to contribute our technology to promote sustainability and transparency in waste management. Our platform is designed to help businesses and organizations manage waste more efficiently and responsibly, and we believe this project will be a significant step towards a circular economy.”
