A new boxing TV show is set to celebrate the top upcoming black talent in the sport.

London, England – Award-winning filmmaker Anthony Vander is bringing together two seemingly unrelated worlds with the launch of his new TV show, Spar. The accomplished director and producer, known for his debut feature Sweetboy which premiered at the American Black Film Festival in 2014, is now setting his sights on the world of boxing.

Spar, which is set to premiere in November 2024, follows the success of Vander’s short film version, released in 2020. The show stars Nicola Roffe (Fast Girls), Edwin De La Renta (Pretty Red Dress, Bharat), Andre Fyffe (Casualty), and 2023 BAFTA nominee Jordan Pitt. The episode is written by Vander and Kate Napoli, and produced by actor Mavin Rasheed (Professor T, The Power).

Inspired by director Rapman’s unique storytelling and strong representation in his work, Vander saw an opportunity to create something new and exciting in the world of boxing.

“He (Rapman) has a fresh approach to storytelling and representation in all his creations. It’s incredibly inspiring and the blueprint for success,” Vander said. “I went out and made Spar because I had to create my own yes, plus no one in the UK has ever done a boxing show like this before.”

After its premiere, Spar will embark on a tour of boxing gyms in the London area. Vander hopes to use the show as a platform to raise awareness for grassroots boxing and the struggles many gyms face.

“We want to spotlight boxing gyms up and down the country. A lot of gyms are struggling due to lack of support. It’s more than a sport. Boxing emphasizes discipline, self-control, and community. If things remain the same, a generation of community could be lost,” Vander said.

In order to further develop and expand the vision of Spar, Vander is seeking out investors. He sees the potential for Spar to become a franchise that is synonymous with the world of boxing.

“With Spar, we have a franchise that is for boxing. I like to think of it as The Bear meets Cobra Kai. We welcome co-productions and investors,” Vander said.

The pilot episode of Spar is set to premiere in November 2024. Distributors and interested investors can contact Vander’s production company through their website. Don’t miss the chance to support and be a part of this groundbreaking new show that celebrates the best up and coming black talent in the world of boxing.
