Age UK East Sussex has recently announced an appeal to aid older individuals who lack digital access.

Age UK East Sussex Launches Appeal to Help Older People Access Essential Support in Digital Era

East Sussex, UK – Age UK East Sussex has launched a new appeal, “Ensuring No One Is Left Behind,” to support the growing number of older people struggling to access digital-only systems for essential support. The charity, dedicated to supporting older people in the local community, is aiming to raise £25,000 by the end of January to meet the increasing demand for assistance.

In today’s digital era, many local councils and services have shifted to online-only applications for vital benefits such as Attendance Allowance and the Blue Badge. However, for older people without digital skills, smart devices, or internet access, this can create overwhelming barriers to the support they need to stay independent. As a result, Age UK East Sussex has experienced a surge in requests for help from older people who are unable to navigate these online systems.

The charity’s Information & Advice service, which provides specialist support for older people, is now facing a three-month waiting list due to the high demand. This means that many older people are left without the essential support they need to live comfortably and independently.

“We hear from people every day who are desperate and worn down by systems they simply can’t access,” says Steve Hare, CEO of Age UK East Sussex. “These aren’t luxuries – they’re essential services that help people stay cared for and independent. No one should be left without support because they don’t have a laptop or can’t use a smart phone. With the backing of our community, we can reach people sooner, reduce waiting times, and make sure every older person in East Sussex can apply for the support they need.”

The funds raised through the appeal will go towards recruiting and training additional advisors and volunteers, providing more one-to-one appointment slots, and covering essential running costs of the Information & Advice service. This will allow the charity to reach more older people, help them access the benefits they are entitled to, and reduce waiting times for those in need.

Age UK East Sussex is calling on local residents, businesses, and community groups to come together and support the appeal. Even a small donation can make a big difference in helping an older person begin their journey to accessing the benefits and support they need.
