Christopher Drake, founder of That Automation Agency, recently conducted an experiment that reveals potential weaknesses in bank voice authentication due to advancements in AI voice cloning technology.
Drake, who produced a YouTube video explaining his findings, used AI-generated voice samples to bypass his bank’s voice ID system, raising important questions about the effectiveness of biometric security measures.
“I was building a solution for a client related to voice AI and video AI technologies, which allow you to duplicate your voice and visuals without recording or filming anything,” Drake said. “Curiosity led me to test whether this technology could fool my bank’s voice authentication system.”
Initially, simpler voice generators did not work as the audio lacked authenticity. However, by using more advanced cloning software and supplying a longer voice sample, Drake created an AI-generated voice that closely matched his own. After several attempts and adjustments, he successfully tricked the bank’s system once.
“I couldn’t believe it worked,” he shared. “Despite repeated attempts afterward, I couldn’t replicate the success. Before releasing his findings, Drake contacted the bank, who have since escalated the matter to their Customer Authentication team for further review.
Security experts warn that while voice ID offers an extra security layer, it should form part of a multi-factor authentication approach. As AI continues to advance, financial institutions must strengthen defences and educate clients on possible risks associated with biometric data.
In light of these findings, Drake recommends security professionals revisit security standards, consider reauthentication processes, and raise customer awareness about protecting their biometric information.
