Bravura, a leading African vertically integrated international mineral resource conglomerate and sister entity of AITEO, the largest indigenous oil and gas producer in Africa, has announced plans to build a large-scale lithium processing plant in Germany by 2027. The final location for the plant, which will produce lithium hydroxide, a key component of high-performance batteries used in electric vehicles, is expected to be determined in early 2025.
The project, which is being led by a subsidiary of Bravura Group, is currently in talks with German automotive OEMs and suppliers for offtake agreements. The company will introduce the project in more detail during the BDI Raw Materials Congress on November 11, 2024, in Berlin, Germany.
The lithium processing plant will be operated by Bravura and will source spodumene concentrate from its various lithium assets across Africa. The concentrate will be transported to Germany and processed into lithium hydroxide, creating a unique African-German supply chain. Bravura will be the first company in Germany to directly provide lithium hydroxide to German OEMs and suppliers without any third-party involvement, supporting the goals of the European Critical Raw Materials Act.
According to the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act, 40% of lithium processing must be conducted within the EU from 2030 onward. Currently, German automotive OEMs and battery manufacturers source 95% of their lithium hydroxide from China due to a lack of local supply. Bravura’s project meets and enables the objectives of this legislation.
The project, which is being planned by German company Dorfner Anzaplan, will contribute to the discussion about the future of raw material supply in Germany at the BDI Raw Materials Congress. The event will bring together top political and industrial stakeholders to discuss the critical raw materials industry.
Bravura is a part of the Peters Family Group (PFG), one of the largest Pan-African conglomerates with interests in energy, mining, health services, real estate, and agriculture. AITEO, the largest indigenous oil and gas producer in Africa, is among Bravura’s sister entities.
