British Parenting Expert Brings Expertise to China, Receives Unexpected Rewards

Elizabeth O’Shea, director of Parent 4 Success, has had the experience of a lifetime after travelling to China to meet and train prospective parenting consultants.

Upon arrival at Shanghai airport, Elizabeth and her business partner, Betty, were greeted with banners and flowers – a sign of wonderful things to come.

The pair then met with the first cohort of parenting consultants and Elizabeth spoke to over 200 parents at a workshop featuring live-action “plays” and parenting scenarios.

Organisers had also provided a simultaneous translation team to communicate with the audience via earpiece, allowing for a seamless experience.

Elizabeth then moved on to Hangzhou, described by the Chinese as “Heaven on Earth”, and was once again welcomed with flowers and a gorgeous Chinese silk dress.

Gift-giving is held in high regard in China and Elizabeth was presented with a sweet poem written by a Chinese calligrapher as a show of respect.

The poem reads:“Beautiful scenery arises from the flat ground.
This beautiful scenery makes people feel relaxed and happy.
Beauty from afar adds infinite spring light to this place.
Everyone is amazed by the sharing you have brought.”

Elizabeth was then treated to a traditional fan dance by two five-year-old girls at the graduation ceremony for the newly-qualified consultants.

At the end of the ceremony, each student took to the stage to speak about how much the course had meant to them, with Elizabeth receiving a hug and a rose from each of them.

The trip ended at East China Normal University, where Elizabeth answered a Q&A in front of a packed live audience – only to be presented with a model of herself!

Elizabeth was gifted so many presents that organisers kindly provided a second suitcase to bring them all back to the UK.

On returning to the UK, Elizabeth reminisced on her time in China, describing it as “culture shock in the best way possible” and commending her graduates’ “immense generosity of spirit and kindness.”

She will soon be bringing her program back to the UK, teaching British parents how to set up their own parenting consulting businesses to help other families and children thrive.
