Celebrating 10 Years of National Fish & Chip Day: Britain’s Favourite Dish Takes Centre Stage Once Again

It’s an age-old debate that divides the nation—whether cod, haddock or plaice should top the menu, and whether curry sauce, mushy peas or gravy are the ultimate accompaniment. But one thing everyone agrees on? Fish and chips remains the ultimate family meal.

On 6th June 2025, National Fish & Chip Day returns to unite the country in celebrating its most beloved dish. This year marks a significant milestone as the event reaches its 10th anniversary.

What began as a modest celebration has grown into the UK’s largest food awareness day, with the 2024 campaign reaching an incredible 93 million people through media coverage and community engagement.

As part of the celebrations, organisers are encouraging the public to find their region’s fish and chip champions, sharing their stories from multi-generational chippies keeping traditions alive, to fryer-side romances to young fish fryers through a nationwide survey.

The campaign also shines a spotlight on everyone behind this national treasure. From fishermen braving the elements to bring in the catch, to farmers growing premium potatoes and peas, and the chefs and shops transforming fresh produce into this iconic dish—each plays a vital role in keeping this tradition alive.

Gary Lewis, President of The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association, which oversees the annual event, reflected on its impact:

“This year marks a significant milestone for National Fish and Chip Day as we celebrate its 10th anniversary! Over the past decade, we’ve seen incredible support from everyone involved with fish and chips across the UK, and we’re thrilled to continue honouring this iconic British dish. Fish and chip shops are at the heart of our communities, and getting involved in this celebration is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the quality and tradition of this family favourite. We encourage all shops to take part and share in the pride and joy that National Fish and Chip Day represents.”
