Coastguard Nelson Upgrades to Digital Radio Dispatch Console, Strengthening Marine Safety

In the scenic coastal city of Nelson, New Zealand, Coastguard Nelson—a committed volunteer-run organisation—has taken a significant leap forward in marine safety by modernising its communications system. With a mission to save lives at sea around the clock, the unit has now embraced the advantages of a digital solution.

Previously relying on a fragile analogue network, the 35-strong team recognised the pressing need for a more robust and future-ready system. They have now completed a key upgrade by installing the Omnicore Express Radio Dispatch Console, complementing their transition to a Tait DMR Tier 3 digital radio network.

The switch to a digital system utilising Radio over IP has been entirely self-financed, thanks to generous support from Pub Charity, the Lion Foundation, and Coastguard New Zealand. The new setup has significantly enhanced transmission clarity and extended coverage across their vast 10,400 square kilometre operational zone.

Notably, the console allows for discreet communication during sensitive operations, bypassing public radio channels. It also enables remote dispatching from a Windows tablet, cutting down the time needed to get teams operational—a particularly beneficial feature in time-critical scenarios.

This technology upgrade places Coastguard Nelson in a strong position to align with New Zealand’s upcoming Public Service Network (P25), a nationwide emergency communications initiative. Importantly, Nelson’s key marine response partners—Tasman and Nelson Harbour Masters, as well as Nelson Surf Life Saving—have also transitioned to the digital DMR system, establishing a unified Search and Rescue channel.

The new solution was delivered by Mount Campbell Communications, with Managing Director Lloyd Welsey affirming its strategic value:

“I am pleased we have been able to provide Nelson Coastguard with a state-of-the-art and future-proof system that will greatly enhance their response capability both internally as well as in collaboration with other rescue agencies.”

Showcasing the project’s innovation, Jerame Ashton of Mount Campbell Communications has been invited to present the case study at the Comms Connect New Zealand conference in Christchurch, June 2025.

Ultimately, this digital advancement is expected to notably improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Coastguard Nelson’s operations, benefiting the safety of the community and the approximately 10,000 recreational and commercial vessels navigating local waters.
