Cyprus’ Voluntary Return Program Under Scrutiny for Human Rights Violations
Monday 17 February, 2025 – The New Arab (TNA) has conducted an in-depth investigation into Cyprus’ flagship initiative, the Voluntary Return Program, which claims to facilitate the return of migrants to their home countries in an organized, safe, and dignified manner.
However, TNA’s findings have exposed a stark contrast to the program’s promises. The Cypriot Ministry of Interior has been accused of pressuring individuals into so-called voluntary returns through coercion and deceit, disregarding the country’s obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights.
The report, which can be accessed in full here, sheds light on the mistreatment of Syrian asylum seekers, including the denial of access to asylum, unlawful detention in inhumane conditions, and false accusations of serious crimes. Despite these grave violations, the European Commission (EC) and Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, continue to provide financial and operational support to the program. In fact, the EC has even promoted the Cypriot model as a successful example for other countries, raising concerns for the more than one million Syrians currently living in Europe.
Andrea Glioti, Investigative Editor at TNA, stated, “Our investigation has revealed disturbing evidence of human rights abuses in Cyprus’ Voluntary Return Program. The Cypriot government’s actions not only violate international conventions but also undermine the rights and well-being of vulnerable individuals seeking asylum. We urge the European Commission and Frontex to take immediate action and halt their support for this program.”
