Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) has revealed that it receives an average of six calls daily to assist critically unwell or injured patients. This includes cases involving children, making up a significant portion of their callouts.
In the previous winter season, GWAAC was called to help 131 babies, children, and teenagers, with similar numbers expected this year. Each call represents a family facing a difficult situation, and the support from the community is vital in helping GWAAC’s crew provide the necessary assistance.
One such case is that of Baby Albie, who was saved thanks to the donations to GWAAC. At just three days old, Albie stopped breathing at home. Luckily, due to the swift response of the midwife, paramedics, and GWAAC’s specialist crew, Albie received the necessary treatment and is now enjoying his second Christmas with his family.
Albie’s mother, Victoria, expressed her gratitude, saying, “When Albie was in the hospital and we were told he might not survive, we made ourselves a promise: never to complain about sleepless nights again. We haven’t always managed to keep it, but every night we get to hear Albie’s laughter or cries, we’re reminded what a gift that is – a gift we only have because people like you cared enough to donate to Great Western Air Ambulance Charity.”
Every call that GWAAC receives is unique, ranging from premature newborns to 19-year-olds, and from sudden seizures to accidents. The fast response, expert care, and advanced equipment provided by GWAAC’s crew often make the difference between life and death for these children.
GWAAC is reminding the public that their support is crucial in helping them continue their lifesaving work. As a charity, they rely on the generosity of the community to fund their operations. GWAAC’s Winter Appeal is currently ongoing, and donations can be made at gwaac.com/appeal.
GWAAC’s CEO, John Christensen, emphasizes the importance of being prepared to assist children in emergencies. He says, “A child in need could be someone you know; it could be your family. Being ready to help children in emergencies requires training, the right skills, and the right equipment, and it takes the support of people like you.”
With the winter season upon us, GWAAC is urging the public to donate to their Winter Appeal and help save a child’s life. For more information and to donate, visit gwaac.com/appeal.
