Easter Weekend Set to Spark UK DIY Boom, New Survey Suggests

As Easter approaches, so too does the start of the UK’s traditional DIY season — a time when households across the country swap chocolate eggs for paintbrushes and power washers. For many, the extended Bank Holiday weekend offers a much-needed window to tackle home maintenance tasks that have been sidelined during colder months.

A recent survey from Thompson’s reveals that over 60% (60.24%) of households plan to take on DIY jobs this Easter, signalling a strong nationwide appetite for home improvements.

Leading the way is patio and driveway power washing, with 34.69% of DIYers saying it’s their top priority. Interior painting is the next most popular task at 20.41%, followed by exterior painting at 18.37%. Other activities include assembling flat-pack furniture (6.12%) and laying new patios or decking (4.08%).

Cleaning Outdoor Spaces Tops Easter DIY Plans

“It’s no surprise that cleaning or power washing a patio or drive comes out as the top DIY job planned for this Bank Holiday,” says Clara Dursent, Brand Manager at Thompson’s. “The UK’s wet and windy weather can take its toll on paving and tarmac. Dirt and fallen leaves can quickly pile up on surfaces, causing unsightly stains that may become hard to clean and can damage the surface over time. Regular cleaning can help preserve the life of your paving, saving hundreds, if not thousands, in the long run.”

In addition to improving kerb appeal, clearing away moss and grime can make outdoor areas safer and more hygienic. Persistent damp can encourage algae and mould, leaving surfaces slippery and at risk of long-term wear if not properly maintained.

The Tools You Need for Easter DIY Success

For those planning a deep clean, having the right equipment can make all the difference. The survey showed that 75.51% of respondents anticipate needing to purchase supplies, with the majority (64.86%) budgeting between £10 and £50.

A pressure washer remains one of the quickest ways to restore tired paving and remove embedded dirt and algae, helping homeowners get the job done with minimal effort.

“However, for a longer-term solution, a specialist cleaner such as Thompson’s Advanced Patio and Block Paving Cleaner will continue to protect the surface from algae growth for a further 6 months. By investing in quality cleaning products and proper maintenance, your patio will look its best all year round. This makes light work of DIY and hopefully leaves you some time to relax this Easter!” says Thompson’s DIY Expert.

For added durability, applying a sealant like Thompson’s One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal can help repel moisture and prevent future staining, moss growth, and surface erosion — leaving patios looking great well beyond the Bank Holiday weekend.
