New release from Escape Fake, “Trouble with eLiza,” is taking on the challenge of combating digital misinformation. The immersive game, released on Tuesday 14 May 2024, thrusts players into the role of digital detectives in an effort to prevent the collapse of the European Union.
With the rise of false information spreading online, “Trouble with eLiza” serves as a crucial tool in promoting media literacy. According to Statista, over 70% of Europeans encounter false information on a weekly basis. The game integrates 3D puzzles and riddles, allowing players to tackle the effects of deepfakes, social media algorithms, and filter bubbles. The storyline follows eLiza, a well-intentioned influencer caught up in a web of AI-generated disinformation, challenging players to distinguish truth from falsehood.
Since its initial release in 2019, Escape Fake has gained over 100,000 users across five languages, making it a valuable resource for educators, families, and media literacy advocates. “Our approach combines playful learning with augmented reality, making complex topics accessible and engaging,” says Thomas Layer-Wagner, CEO of Polycular, the technology studio behind Escape Fake.
“Trouble with eLiza” was developed in collaboration with media education, pedagogy, and journalism experts. Along with the game’s release, a toolkit and online course have been created to enhance teaching strategies. “The game is intellectually stimulating and develops problem-solving abilities that can be applied in various contexts,” notes Irina Paraschivoiu, COO of Polycular.
Escape Fake is created by Polycular, with the support of Expert Forum (RO), La Fabbrica (IT), and ProProgressione (HU). The game is funded by the European Union through the Creative Europe Programme and the European Media and Information Fund.
