“Experts Convene to Bring Attention to the Plight of the Sole Animal Lacking Protection under UK Legislation”

Experts and professionals from various fields, including science, seafood industry, ocean conservation, animal welfare, and even celebrities, will gather for the first ever Crustacean Compassion Day on June 10, 2025. This unique gathering aims to bring together individuals and organizations from different sectors and interest groups to address the pressing need to protect decapod crustaceans, such as lobsters, crabs, and prawns, which are currently not covered by UK law.

Dr. Ben Sturgeon, CEO of Crustacean Compassion, an animal welfare organization advocating for better treatment for decapod crustaceans, explains the importance of this day, “Lobsters, crabs, and prawns are the only group of sentient animals not protected under UK law. They are often subjected to cruel and painful practices from the moment they are caught to the moment they die.” He adds, “We’re asking everyone to join our pincer movement to show the lawmakers and industry decision-makers that the public does care and wants to see better treatment for these animals.”

Crustacean Compassion has been working with supermarkets and restaurants to implement more humane practices for decapod crustaceans. While progress has been made, there is still a long way to go. Many of these animals continue to suffer from inhumane treatment, not just in the food industry but also in the wild. As Dr. Sturgeon emphasizes, “Crustaceans are not only crucial to the health of our oceans, but they are also extraordinary creatures. They are intelligent, sensitive, and deserving of our respect and care.”

On Crustacean Compassion Day, people are invited to join the “pincer movement” and raise awareness about the plight of decapod crustaceans. The day will include a series of webinars with experts discussing crustacean sentience, welfare, and conservation, a crustacean photo competition, the premiere of a new video for children, and fun and creative activities for all ages. There will also be a prize giveaway for donations made, and opportunities to take action and protect these animals.

Crustacean Compassion Ambassador, TV presenter, and animal activist Wendy Turner-Webster states, “I’ve seen firsthand the cruelty decapod crustaceans face, and I’m proud to stand with Crustacean Compassion to demand better for these sentient animals. Crabs, lobsters, and prawns feel pain – and today, on Crustacean Compassion Day, I’m speaking up for their right to be treated with care. It’s time to tell a different story about crustaceans – one of compassion and protection.”

Join the movement and help make a difference for decapod crustaceans on Crustacean Compassion Day, June 10, 2025. For more information and to take part in the events, visit the Crustacean Compassion website.
