FEV, a global leader in innovation for the future of mobility, has unveiled their latest development, CogniSafe, a cutting-edge Driver Monitoring System (DMS) that aims to significantly improve road safety. Utilizing advanced technologies such as deep learning and computer vision, CogniSafe is able to monitor driver conditions in real time, even under challenging circumstances.
Dr. Thomas Hülshorst, Group Vice President Intelligent Mobility & Software at FEV, explains that CogniSafe is a comprehensive and innovative system that utilizes a variety of sensors and combines them with artificial intelligence (AI) to precisely analyze driver behavior and alertness. This is particularly important in (semi-) autonomous vehicles where legal safety requirements are increasing and the driver must be able to intervene in any situation. By actively reducing accidents caused by human error, which make up over 90% of all accidents, FEV’s latest development is making significant strides in improving road safety.
CogniSafe utilizes a unique combination of functions that work together seamlessly. It incorporates a network of cameras in the visible light and infrared spectrum to analyze driver behavior from multiple angles. Using this information, the system continuously tracks the driver’s gaze, monitors eye condition (percentage of eye closure, PERCLOS) and evaluates head posture, providing further insight into alertness, fatigue and drowsiness.
The use of AI is crucial in the operation of FEV’s latest development. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are utilized to perform precise real-time analyses that can adapt to different drivers and environmental conditions, such as varying lighting conditions, and continuously improve.
In addition to improving road safety, CogniSafe is also of interest to other parties such as fleet operators and insurance companies, who have a vested interest in promoting safe driving practices. As Hülshorst points out, “The solution is also very interesting for target groups such as fleet operators or insurance companies, who have a strong interest in safe driving practices.”
