Global Reuse Practitioners Survey Launched to Address Lack of Implementation in Plastic Waste Reduction
Thursday 21 August, 2025 – The collapse of negotiations at the International Negotiating Committee (INC) 5.2 has been deemed a lost opportunity to make significant progress in tackling plastic waste. The talks, which were meant to focus on production limits and effective solutions, failed to produce any concrete actions.
One of the most widely recognized solutions to reducing plastic packaging waste is through reuse. By replacing single-use models with refillable, returnable, or packaging-free systems, this approach prevents waste at the source. However, despite its effectiveness, reuse is often overlooked in policymaking and poorly understood by practitioners.
To bridge this gap, the REUSE Foundation has launched the Global Reuse Practitioners Survey, the world’s first initiative to gather insights on this critical movement. This survey will gather perspectives from those implementing reuse strategies across a variety of markets and contexts, from multinational supply chains to local community schemes.
The survey will focus on identifying operational barriers and opportunities for scaling reuse, as well as policy and regulatory measures that can accelerate adoption. It will also gather insights on effective financial and business models, as well as key lessons learned from practitioners on the ground.
According to Roger Sharp, Trustee of the REUSE Foundation, the absence of reuse practitioners in global discussions creates a disconnect between policy ambitions and practical implementation. By capturing these insights, the foundation aims to ensure that future strategies are grounded in real-world experience.
The survey findings will be published in a global report later this year, which will serve as a guide for policymakers, industry leaders, and civil society on creating enabling conditions for scaling reuse.
All reuse practitioners across sectors are invited to contribute to the survey, which can be accessed here.
