Genie AI Poised to Launch UK’s First AI Legal Assistant, Set to Outperform GPT-4

Genie AI, a prominent artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technology company, has provided an update on the development of the UK’s first AI Legal Assistant, expected to outperform the capabilities of GPT-4.

Genie AI is leveraging OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology to build its proprietary Large Language Models (LLM). GPT-4 has demonstrated remarkable performance on the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), surpassing all previous LLMs by scoring in the top 10% of human test-takers in both the multiple-choice and written components. In comparison, GPT-3 scored in the bottom 10%.

The significant advancements in foundation models like GPT-4 are attributed to scaling the underlying model rather than specific fine-tuning for legal applications. However, Genie AI, based in London, aims to surpass GPT-4’s performance in legal tasks by the end of the year, measured by accuracy under UK law.

The key features of Genie AI’s AI Legal Assistant include:

  1. Real-time document-level workflows: Users can input queries at the document level, requesting suggestions for relevant standard clauses or missing elements in real-time.
  2. Red-flag review: The AI Legal Assistant automatically flags clauses in AI-assisted documents as red, yellow, or green based on riskiness and favorability. In-line suggestions are provided with explanations for the user’s consideration.
  3. Legal explanations: The AI Legal Assistant simplifies, summarizes, or explains entire documents or clauses, drawing on the legal expertise of senior legal counsel.

In addition to surpassing GPT-4, Genie AI’s AI Legal Assistant will offer a “multi-modal” experience, integrated natively within the Genie editor. It will provide capabilities for commenting, reviewing, reformatting, highlighting, annotating, suggesting, and exporting, emulating human-like functionality.

To outperform GPT-4, Genie AI’s AI Legal Assistant utilizes extensive legal and commercial datasets, including business contracts and legal precedents, alongside hundreds of prompts crafted by senior lawyers specifically tailored to legal use cases. The system also incorporates insights from several other models in addition to GPT-4.

Genie AI’s open-source legal templates, numbering 1,500, are already in use by 1,000 law firms and companies with in-house legal teams. Over 10,000 organizations overall benefit from these templates, with 200 new entities joining daily. The anonymized data generated from user comments, suggestions, and edits is structured and incorporated into Genie AI’s own LLM for fine-tuning.

Alex Papadopoulos, ML Research Scientist at Genie AI, expressed pride in the progress made and highlighted the foundation of their LLM, which combines proprietary usage data and over 100,000 megacap company agreements. Through continuous customer research, Genie AI aims to develop the world’s premier AI Legal Assistant for the UK and other common law jurisdictions.

Genie AI is also conducting testing of its AI Legal Assistant in complementary common law jurisdictions, including the United States, Canada, India, Australia, and New Zealand.
