A Worcestershire-based commercial property consultancy has been selected to oversee the property management of Worcester’s iconic Hopmarket, comprising a substantial portfolio of mixed-use accommodation.
GJS Dillon‘s Asset Management team has been entrusted with the responsibility of managing 25 retail units and 44 affordable housing flats at the Hopmarket. In collaboration with the Hopmarket Charity, registered landlords on behalf of Worcester City Council, and Platform Housing Group, who manage the flats, GJS Dillon will handle various tasks such as client communication, repairs and maintenance, as well as ensuring the community’s health and safety within the Hopmarket premises.
The Hopmarket derives its name from Worcester’s Hop Fair, where surplus hops were traded with dealers from all over the country during the 1890s. Constructed in 1900, the Grade II listed building originally served as a hotel and warehouse before being converted into the retail units and flats that exist today.
The Hopmarket Charity, established by a Parliamentary Act in 1730, has been entrusted with the maintenance of the Hopmarket and the provision of support to those in need. The current Trustees, of whom two-thirds must be members of Worcester City Council, collaborate to lease the retail units to a diverse range of entrepreneurial traders and enhance footfall within the market. Any surplus funds generated from these lettings are converted into grants for local charitable causes, thereby aiding individuals in need.
Emily Bullock, GJS Dillon’s Associate Director of Asset Management, expressed her delight at assuming this new responsibility. She highlighted the beauty of the building and the intriguing mix of tenants, emphasizing the company’s commitment to fostering a positive community within the Hopmarket.
Bill Simpson, Chairman of the Hopmarket Charity, expressed satisfaction with the work carried out by Emily and her team thus far. He acknowledged their vital role in ensuring the continued vibrancy of the Hopmarket, which serves as a bustling community hub in the heart of the city.
