This Sunday, 28th May, marks the annual Menstrual Hygiene Day, which was first established by the German NGO WASH United to raise awareness of period poverty and the importance of menstrual hygiene management.
In celebration of the tenth anniversary of Menstrual Hygiene Day, Hope Spring Nigeria are running a reusable pad training workshop at Government Secondary School Kabusa Abuja, in order to educate young girls on the importance of menstrual hygiene and provide them with sustainable solutions.
The project, which is set to benefit more than 40 young adults, will teach the girls the fabric and size specification needed to make a reusable pad, as well as how to cut, assemble and make their own reusable pads. This will help keep girls in school, while also alleviating period poverty.
Bolu Olorunfemi, Director of Period Poverty at Hope Spring Nigeria, said: “We are pleased with the hands-on workshop we are running on May 31st. It’s a great opportunity for young women to take ownership of their reproductive health needs, while also preserving the environment for future generations.”
Hope Spring’s menstrual hygiene work was recently boosted by two sources, including proceeds of the popular video eCard ‘Happy Birthday from Africa’, as well as a sponsored fundraiser.
