Hereford water poverty alleviation charity, Hope Spring, has announced a new partnership with online training website odurinde.com. The partnership will see the website host water purification and hygiene training workshops in ten locations across Nigeria, in an effort to alleviate water poverty in the country.
The initiative is part of a series of projects planned by Hope Spring to commemorate their 10th anniversary. The charity, which primarily works with communities in dire need of clean water in West Africa, has constructed boreholes and wells in several communities across the region, with a focus on Nigeria.
With this new partnership, Hope Spring will now also focus on training local water and sanitation champions in their communities. These champions will then pass on their knowledge to others in the community, teaching them the importance of clean water and how to purify water from local sources like rivers and lakes. This will not only provide a sustainable solution to water hardship, but also reduce the spread of diseases caused by drinking contaminated water.
Tomi Onigbinde, a volunteer at Hope Spring, explained the reasoning behind the partnership, stating that while the charity will still continue to build wells and boreholes for deserving communities, this training project is a more cost-effective way to provide sustainable access to clean water. He added that it is also much cheaper and less problematic than constructing a borehole.
The charity has already identified a short list of potential beneficiary communities and plans to roll out the training project in May 2025. Hope Spring relies on donations from the public and the sale of belated birthday eCards and other digital goods from its online greetings cards website to fund its projects.
More information about the partnership and other events planned for their 10th anniversary can be found on Hope Spring’s website and social media pages.
