Welshpool, UK – Kenton Jones, the renowned maker of handcrafted kitchens and timber interiors, is embarking on a new journey as its work in both bespoke joinery and modular homes garners national recognition.
Established in 1977, the company has been designing and building exquisite kitchens, pantries, utility rooms, and fitted furniture pieces in its Welshpool workshop for almost five decades. With showrooms in Welshpool and Shrewsbury, Kenton Jones serves homes across Mid Wales, Shropshire, and Cheshire, staying true to its unwavering focus on made-to-measure designs, carefully selected timber, and traditional joinery carried out by its in-house team.
“Our commitment to sustainability has been ingrained in our ethos since the beginning. We have always sourced our timber from local forests and dried it ourselves, even before it became a popular concept,” shares Executive Director Kenton Jones. “This mindset has been the driving force behind everything we do.”
Welsh timber homes make their debut on national television
Kenton Jones’ work, together with its modular homes arm, Unnos Systems, has been featured on national television in recent times.
In the latest season of Channel 4’s “Grand Designs,” a modular family home in Southwater, West Sussex, designed and constructed in the Welshpool factory, was showcased for its timely delivery, adherence to budget, and top-notch quality. Show host Kevin McCloud described the Southwater modular home as “the first project to deliver all three – on time, on budget, and with high quality.” He also commented, “It’s all about containing costs – having it prefabricated in a factory in Wales, brought in on lorries, costing exactly what you thought it would. That is the future of Grand Designs. It’s the future of self-build.”
Another project by Kenton Jones and Unnos Systems was featured on Channel 5’s “Build Your Dream Home in the Country” in the episode “Island Home,” which followed the process of constructing a timber house in Wales and transporting it to the Outer Hebrides for assembly in a remote coastal landscape.
From kitchens to complete modular homes
In addition to its renowned kitchens and interiors, Kenton Jones has expanded its offerings to include complete modular homes, utilizing the same workshop, craftsmen, and supply of homegrown timber.
Modules are digitally designed, built, and finished in a controlled environment in Mid Wales before being delivered to sites worldwide. The aim is to combine the precision and tranquility of a joinery workshop with the demands of architecturally-graded buildings, resulting in interiors that are as thoughtfully designed as the structure that surrounds them.
“Our foray into modular homes felt like a return to our roots rather than a new venture,” says Kenton Jones. “We have always combined design, structure, and joinery. The only difference now is the scale of the projects and the tools at our disposal.”
A royal commission that shaped the business
During its earlier years, Kenton Jones was commissioned to design and install a bespoke kitchen at Highgrove House for the then Prince of Wales, now King Charles. Crafted from locally sourced oak and tailored to suit the character of the house, the project reinforced the company’s belief in provenance, proportion, and understated detail.
This commission played a significant role in the development of the Highgrove collection, which comprises a range of kitchens that celebrate natural timber, clean lines, and British craftsmanship, rather than fleeting trends.
Kitchens and homes for discerning clients
Today, Kenton Jones collaborates with discerning homeowners, architects, interior designers, and self-build clients who prefer to work with a single workshop for both their interiors and the structure of their homes through Unnos Systems.
Within its primary business, the Artisan, Bauhaus, Hygge, and Highgrove kitchen collections offer distinct design languages, from classic in-frame Shaker styles to sleek handleless schemes and minimalist Scandinavian-inspired designs. Each project begins with an in-depth design consultation and is then built and installed by the company’s own teams, ensuring that the cabinetry, flooring, and furniture blend seamlessly with the architecture of the home.
For professional clients such as architects, developers, main contractors, public-estate teams, project management and cost consultancies, and engineering practices, Unnos Systems provides fully finished timber modules with joinery-grade interiors and a short on-site program, making them ideal for delicate landscapes, tight access, or exposed locations.
“Most of our clients are making decisions that will impact their homes for a lifetime. Our job is to guide them through the process, ask the right questions, and ensure that every decision stands the test of time,” says Kenton Jones.
