On 30th January 2024, Arcola Theatre will be premiering “Broken Water” – an acclaimed play exploring the experience of motherhood. Directed by Nicola Samer, the Resident Director for “The Cursed Child”, the play is less about holding babies than about the love we hold for our babies when they are not there to receive it.
The production is a Lightbox Theatre production and has been shortlisted for the Verity Bargate and Nick Darke Awards. It has been met with great acclaim, with Martin Clunes OBE, Kathy Burke and Marion Bailey all praising the play.
Writer Michéle Winstanley delves into motherhood, loss, infertility, career change, career loss and societal expectations of mothers/motherhood.
The cast includes Sarah Hadland (BBC’s Horrible Histories and Murder They Hope) Rosemary Ashe (Adrian Mole, The Witches of Eastwick and Mary Poppins) and Naomi Petersen (Constant Companions and Drifters).
The play will run from 30th January to 24th February 2024, with Press Night on 1st February. Tickets are available now from Arcola Theatre’s website.
“Broken Water” is part of an important national conversation – women are contextualised through the lens of motherhood and notmotherhood.
