SHYNNE, a community-based social enterprise in Mill Hill, is marking a significant achievement after being awarded £20,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund. This investment will enable the group to expand its unique gaming events that offer safe, inclusive environments for neurodivergent children and teenagers, including those with autism and ADHD.
Creating Inclusive Gaming Events That Work for Everyone
Unlike typical gaming venues that can be overwhelming, SHYNNE’s sessions are thoughtfully designed to be welcoming and accessible for all. The sessions feature:
- Adjustable lighting and volume to support sensory needs
- Calm breakout spaces for when participants need quiet time
- Easy-to-follow visual timetables to provide predictability
- Friendly staff trained in neurodivergent communication styles
- Adaptable activities so participants can take part however they feel comfortable
“Many of our young people have had negative experiences in mainstream social settings,” explains Marlon Huggins, founder of SHYNNE. “Our gaming events eliminate those barriers, creating an environment where differences aren’t just accommodated—they’re celebrated.”
Gaming That Supports Wellbeing and Development
More than just entertainment, SHYNNE’s gaming events serve as tools for growth. Each session is built to promote:
- Collaborative play that helps develop social interaction
- Strategy games that improve executive functioning skills
- A relaxed atmosphere that supports emotional regulation
- Confidence boosts through peer recognition and in-game achievements
- Stronger communication skills encouraged through group challenges
“I am so grateful to the National Lottery for this incredible support,” said Huggins. “This funding will directly fuel our gaming events, which are hugely popular and meaningful for the young people we work with. These aren’t just games—they’re confidence-building, social-connecting, joy-sparking lifelines for neurodiverse youth.”
Funding Enables SHYNNE to Grow
With support from the National Lottery, SHYNNE will increase its community impact. Its plans include:
- Doubling the number of gaming sessions per month
- Launching sessions tailored by age group
- Offering a lending service for adapted gaming tools and resources
- Creating a peer-led mentoring initiative
- Hosting gaming nights for families to enjoy shared experiences
This grant will also enhance SHYNNE’s wider services, including educational workshops and one-to-one mentoring, helping neurodivergent young people navigate daily life and transitions more confidently.
Grassroots Change Backed by the Community
Founded by local resident Marlon Huggins, SHYNNE is built on a community-first model, shaped by continuous feedback from the young people and families it serves. The project’s growth is a testament to the value of locally informed solutions.
By supporting SHYNNE, the National Lottery Community Fund continues its mission of empowering grassroots organisations and investing in meaningful, community-led change—particularly for underserved groups like neurodivergent youth.
