For entrepreneurs seeking straightforward, actionable insights, serial entrepreneur Perry Burns has authored a new book designed to tackle the unique challenges faced by SMEs, setting it apart from traditional corporate-focused titles.
Set for release on 1st September 2025, “101 Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Started My Business” has already been described as an essential “first-aid kit” for business leaders. Drawing on over 50 years of real-world experience, Perry delivers lessons, anecdotes, and “war stories” shaped by decades of hands-on involvement in business growth and innovation.
The road to publication, however, wasn’t without a few surprises. A file error during production meant the wrong manuscript was sent to print, resulting in several minor typos. Perry uses this as a case study in resilience, explaining his SAFETY process (outlined on page 203) and joking:
“Readers of the first edition have been the lucky recipients of the ‘E’ & ‘T’ parts of the process.”
While significant issues have now been resolved, Perry encourages readers to report any lingering errors:
“It’s all part of the entrepreneurial journey,” he adds with a smile.
Covering an expansive range of topics, including leadership, financial strategy, AI, and SEO, the book mixes practical checklists and strategies with humour, cartoons, and QR-accessible tools. Perry is also inviting entrepreneurs to share their own business “war stories” for potential inclusion in the next edition.
Perry’s entrepreneurial journey began selling cash registers door-to-door before progressing into retail technology and software. Over the years, he expanded into industries such as finance, professional services, and electric motorbikes. After achieving his first board appointment in 1985, he went on to serve with organisations including UK Finance and the Motorcycle Industry Association. Today, he champions innovation, clear communication, and strategic vision as essential drivers for business success in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
