A new group exhibition titled “Take Hold” is set to open on Sunday, March 9, 2025, curated by Rachel Botha. The exhibition will feature works from a diverse group of artists, including Husk Bennett, Chloe Brenan, Aifric Prior Beliere, Laura Fitzgerald, Cecelia Graham, Marielle MacLeman, Samir Mahmood, William McKeown, and Michaela Razafima Nash. The project, which aims to explore the idea of “hope as a practice,” will showcase various forms of art, including painting, textile, sound, text, video, sculpture, photography, and installation.
According to Botha, the exhibition is a response to the current state of the world, with its various challenges, including the climate crisis, capitalism, and systems that lack care for humanity. The artists involved in the exhibition will offer their interpretations of hope as a tool to combat these issues, from their unique perspectives.
The concept of “hope as a practice” was inspired by environmental activist, author, and Buddhist scholar Joanna Macy. Botha believes that during these times of turmoil and uncertainty, hope should be seen as a committed form of collective resistance, rather than just a fleeting feeling. It can serve as a motivation to take action and envision a better future, while also acknowledging the necessity of anger in response to injustice.
The exhibition takes its name and concept from a publication that invited contributors to reflect on our human and artistic conditions. It encouraged them to share their vulnerability and explore the interconnectedness of our world. Some of the contributors from the publication will also have works featured in the exhibition, providing different perspectives on the concept of hope.
In addition to the invited artists, Take Hold is also supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Derry City & Strabane District Council, and the Visual Arts Bursary from the Arts Council Ireland. The exhibition will also include a selection of works from the Arts Council Ireland Collection.
Take Hold is a powerful and thought-provoking exhibition that invites viewers to rethink their understanding of hope and its role in our lives. Through the various forms of art on display, the exhibition aims to reanimate hope and its relevance in the face of adversity. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this unique and timely exhibition.
