On Monday, July 29, 2024, International Animal Rescue (IAR) released their latest Impact Report to celebrate World Conservation Day. The report highlighted the success of IAR’s holistic conservation program, IARconserves, in making a real and lasting difference to nature, communities, and the environment.
One of the highlights of the report was the story of Budi, an orangutan who captured the hearts of social media followers. Budi was rescued from a chicken coop and, after eight years of rehabilitation, was successfully returned to the wild. This heartwarming story showcases the power of IAR’s efforts in protecting and rehabilitating animals.
Another inspiring story from the report was the first-ever 96-strong female firefighting team in Borneo, affectionately known as “The Power of Mama.” These brave women are not only fighting fires, but also challenging gender norms and empowering their communities. This initiative is just one example of the positive impact IAR is having on local engagement in wildlife conservation.
In addition to these success stories, the report also highlighted the achievements of IARconserves in protecting animal habitats and preventing deforestation. Over 300,000 hectares of forest have been protected through the program, which has also prevented 70 million tonnes of CO2e greenhouse gas emissions.
Gavin Bruce, CEO of International Animal Rescue and its IARconserves Programme, expressed his pride in the results of their conservation efforts. He stated, “As we reflect on the impact of our conservation efforts this World Conservation Day, it’s evident that our holistic approach is making a substantial difference. We are achieving tangible and sustainable results through dedicated collaboration with communities and rigorous implementation of tailored initiatives. Let us continue to amplify our impact and forge a brighter future for people, wildlife, and the environment.”
Dr Karmele Llano Sanchez, Programme Director of YIARI, IAR’s implementation partner for IARconserves in Indonesia, also shared her thoughts on the success of the program. She said, “The journey of The Power of Mama exemplifies the transformative power of grassroots initiatives and collective action in wildlife conservation. These remarkable women are safeguarding forests, challenging gender norms, inspiring change, and building resilient communities. Their dedication is a testament to local engagement’s crucial role in achieving lasting conservation outcomes.”
The full Impact Report can be downloaded from IAR’s website and showcases the various initiatives and accomplishments of IARconserves. As we continue to face challenges in conservation, it is important to recognize the positive impact that dedicated efforts and partnerships can have on protecting our planet and its inhabitants.
